Are you fascinated by the wonders that our seas and lakes hide? Are you starting to inquire about a diving course? Maybe you are planning a vacation and thinking about adding a coral reef visit?

If like us you have thought about all this, you will have noticed that there is a small obstacle in between: I have to take a diving course! Hence a thousand questions arise from one question: which diving school should I choose? How can I tell if one course is better than another? If I want to immerse myself in total safety, which training course is more suitable for me?

If these questions have crossed your mind, this mini-guide is for you!

Discover the underwater world

Before embarking on your next diving journey, it is good to understand a fundamental factor: diving is, first of all, a moment of leisure. In an underwater world that is the exact opposite of ours, there is indeed no room for haste. Try to think about it: under our feet there is a world that has remained so for tens, hundreds, thousands of years. When we dive we leave behind us the chaos of the city, the traffic noise, the stress of work and deadlines. In front of us, however, we have something that only a diver can describe.

You will have heard about the breath and the relaxing factors it can give to our body. During the day it is difficult to listen to it, to focus on it, to get in tune with it. Yet the vast majority of meditation courses begin with training the student to perceive the breath as a source of relaxation. Well: if during the day this activity requires a certain commitment, a certain isolation, in the underwater world this is a routine. As soon as we dive in, our breath is the only thing we can hear and believe us, it is the most relaxing sound you will ever hear.

The characteristics of a diving school

Now that we have eliminated the stress factor from our list, we can focus on the characteristics that a good diving course – and consequently a good diving school – should have. Assuming that your diving course must be fun and stimulating for you, the course must proceed in a fluid and fun way. Here then comes the instructors, with whom you will spend most of your time during the course. For us, a good instructor must be able to guarantee these characteristics:

  • He must be able to involve you during the course
    Knowing you, he can stimulate topics that are most interesting for you and address others in a way that is more suited to your abilities, answering all your questions;
  • He must be able to teach you to master the equipment
    He must not only teach you to use them, but to become familiar with them and bring you to a level that can be used in any circumstance;
  • He must not be in a hurry to finish a course
    Unfortunately, when the summer season approaches, diving schools begin to register dozens of requests for diving courses and this, unintentionally, can push some of them to “speed up” the preparation time a little.
    A good instructor must know how to respect the times of each student, making himself available to accompany him in his natural understanding of the theoretical topics or his practical skills, which is why a diving school should have more instructors.
  • The instructor must be well organized
    Let me be clear, we too systematically forget where we put the pencil a moment ago. A good instructor must be well organized at the didactic, organizational and above all structural level. At the didactic level, he must have a clear understanding of the educational path that he intends to face with his students. On an organizational level, the good instructor knows how to use and exploit different tools to face the diving course such as interactive slides, video lessons, simulations and so on. This brings us to the last factor: the structural organization. A good diving instructor is supported by a good underwater structure: a course center, perhaps with a refreshment room, with mannequins dedicated to simulations, video projectors and so on will surely give their contribution to a lean and effective course!
    Some tips before the course

Once you have visited the possible diving schools, there is one last thing you need to do before choosing the right one for you: ask the instructors for certifications. Find out about their level of preparation by asking them for patents, active certifications, insurance for them and their students. Take a look at the equipment you will be using for your course and make sure it is of quality. This will give you more confidence underwater and you will gain more control of yourself.
